We love headphones, but most of all, we love music. We think a headphone’s purpose is to convey the meaning, emotion, and nuance of music, connecting the listener in the most intimate way possible with the sounds that make his or her heart sing and spirits rise.

Headphones provide the most intense connection possible between listener and music. When you go under your trusty headphones, you are sealed off from the cares of the day and allowed to enter a world of pure music and sound, for true one-on-one contact with your favorite artists.

The best headphones by their very nature are capable of completely revealing all the micro subtleties of any recording in ways that no other means of sound reproduction can; with headphones, there is simply nowhere for bad sound to hide!

Many modern headphones have amazing technical specifications and are fully capable of resolving every last bit of recorded information, yet can fall short in the critical areas of tone and timbre, pace and rhythm, soundstage/imaging, and overall musical coherence; in short, in those areas that are harder to measure with machines but readily apparent to the human ear.

When you combine the formidable capabilities of modern headphone drivers with the unique way we interact so closely with them, audio upgrades can be much more obvious, audible and rewarding under their microscope. While it may be somewhat easier to make a difference in headphone performance, it is also much harder to get it right!

We started Lawton Audio in 2007 with the goal of perfecting what we feel are the best cans on the market today, namely the AH Series of hi-end headphones from Denon, Japan. Mark Lawton, owner and proprietor of Lawton Audio, a true “headphone geek” and audiophile, took his infatuation with these Denon headphones and over time has developed, expanded and perfected a series of well-received mods for them that transform and tune these sonic marvels into true world-class musical transducers. Every mod you see on our site has been meticulously conceived, developed, and tested by Mark specifically for these Denons over the last 4 years. Truth be told, Mark is his own first and best customer for these mods; he is always looking for more and better ways to wring out the last drop of music from his own Denons for his own personal enjoyment. Only when he finds something that works, does it become a product available for you.

Lawton first published his original recipe for what is now just part of our basic Level 1 Mod for Denon nearly 5 years ago. Then called the “markl Mod”, this original tuning for Denon was a massive hit with the D.I.Y. crowd within the headphone community. Lawton become overwhelmed with requests to perform this mod on others’ Denons, and over time this service morphed into Lawton Audio. We have since added numerous additional upgrades and enhancements including our custom wood chambers, our wonderful line of headphone cables, and now our new Angle Pads.

We recognize our customers are building a headphone for a lifetime of enjoyment, and we treat them with great respect and care. We provide a level of customization and personalization you will not find anywhere else; each Lawton Audio headphone is a unique work of art commissioned by you for you.
