Lawton Audio LA Lite Series Headphones: Step Into Our World

Once a Denon stock unit has undergone our Level 2 procedure and is properly tuned and outfitted with a pair of our custom chambers, it becomes part of our LA Lite Series line of headphones.

A Denon AH-D2000 that has received the Level 2 Mod is now referred to as a LA-D2000 Lite.

A Denon AH-D5000 that has received the Level 2 Mod is now referred to as a LA-D5000 Lite.

With our Luthier Tonewoods series, we introduce many spectacular new woods to our line-up (with even more to come). Lawton Audio

has teamed up with a master supplier of the best wood billets to makers of high-end musical instruments, and obtained special access

to a host of truly world-class instrument-grade boards. Most of the blocks we select are also fully seasoned as well, a process that takes

years but is necessary for the woods to fully stabilize and present their final tonal character. Plus, all premium Tonewoods will now

feature the full labor intensive and time consuming high-luster, “piano gloss” style finish so many have requested!

Different Woods for Different Shades of Sound!

One of the things we noticed immediately when initially developing our cups (and which has been subsequently confirmed many times

over in the field by customer reports), is the observation that different woods can have different effects on the overall subjective tonality

of the headphones, just as different woods do when used to make the same musical instrument. Luthiers, or musical instrument makers,

have known this for centuries of course, and have long since identified those wood species that produce the most desirable tones for

different kinds of instruments. These are called “Tonewoods”.

The use of these wonderful Tonewoods in our custom chambers allows Lawton Audio to provide you with a brand new kind of personalized enhancement for your listening pleasure. The subtle differences in tone produced by our headphones with different cups installed enables us to tailor the wood we recommend for your pair to better match your own personal sonic priorities. When you place your order, we will ask you a simple series of four very basic questions about your listening habits and preferences. Based on your answers, we will make recommendations from the available woods that will best match your needs.

Custom Wood Cups for Your Denons– Not Just for Looks

There’s no doubt about it, our custom wood chambers for Denon headphones are a sight to behold. But they are not just about mere outer beauty. How often is plastic used in the construction of genuine musical instruments? The truth is that the plastic cups of the Denon AH-D2000 have a negative impact on that phone’s tone and timbre, producing a colored sound that can only be described as, well, “plastic-y”. When you switch from the stock Denon D2000 to the D5000 (the chief difference between them being the latter’s wooden cups), you can really appreciate the significant effect wood has on the sound, which suddenly becomes more organic, natural, and musical.

Having successfully tackled stray chassis resonances with our Original Tuning for Denon phones, and improved coherence and soundstage with our Angle Pads, we set out on the next quest on our path to perfecting the Denons: upgrade those critical acoustic chambers. Our mission this time was two-fold: find a solution for D2000 owners who want those wooden chambers, but also re-design and enhance them over the factory’s approach, so that even owners of D5000s and D7000s can enjoy the benefits possible from an improved chamber form.

We knew we could better optimize and tune the chambers for acoustic qualities, so we set about completely re-imagining the stock cups. Lawton Audio introduced our first line of exotic, hand-turned wooden chambers for Denon AH Series headphones in 2008. They were an immediate hit and continue to be one of our most in demand products or services. We have continued to improve and refine our design over time, and are now on our fifth officially released version which we are calling our Luthier Tonewoods series.

Improved Driver Chamber Design for Better Sound

We created dozens of prototypes and spent a tremendous amount of time and effort experimenting with different chamber sizes and shapes, wall thickness, chamber depths, etc., to arrive at a design that truly offers superior sound and performance all around without compromise.

Our cups are slightly larger than the stock with slightly thicker walls in strategic areas that provide better resonance control; plus our cups’ design allows them to couple in a more secure and snug way to the chassis of the headphone, for a more solid, focused sound. We feel the exclusive design of our chambers (especially in combination with our Original Lawton Tuning) truly allows the amazing Denon drivers in your pair of Lawton Audio headphones to perform at their absolute peak potential. Our cups help focus the amazing energy of the Denon drivers, enhancing speed, clarity, snap, and precision, again tuning the headphone ever more toward perfection.

Our customers frequently also find that Denons with our cups on them also sound more spacious, with a larger and more substantial image/soundstage area, for a more “out of head” listening experience. The music surrounding you seems bigger and to be happening on a larger stage in a slightly larger venue. Our chambers themselves are amazingly complex pieces of precision wood turning as you can see from the inside view. The amount of highly skilled human labor, attention to detail, and plain old care and love involved in bringing you these wooden chambers is evident. We know you will enjoy!

All of our new Luthier Tonewoods line of cups come with the full “piano gloss” style deluxe finish that so many have requested. This demanding process can take up to 3 weeks to complete, requiring multiple coats of premium grade finishing materials that must fully dry in between applications. The result is a gorgeous, liquid clear and shiny finish that really saturates and brings out the natural colors of the wood. This intensive process results in a museum- grade finish that will last a lifetime. The new finish comes standard at no extra charge with the purchase of a pair of Tonewoods cups. Not all of the amazing pics here on our new website feature the new finish, so you can expect even more pop and bling from your pair!
