These mods consist of two parts: strategic placement of highly specialized damping materials, and careful addition of more stuffing to the ear pads.

The outcome of all this damping and mod-ing (which we execute painstakingly, requiring over three hours to complete), is a wonderfully robust and musical headphone, with an incredibly balanced and natural tonality, that sounds as life-like as many of the finest speakers.  Highs are sweet and extended, the midrange full and clear, no longer shrouded in a cloud of bass. The pure resolution and fine detail unearthed by these headphones will stand up to the best cans out there, even the electrostatics.

 

The once diminutive soundstage opens up and expands outward. The gap in the middle of the image is closed, and you can now “see” the musicians in front of you, presented as an unbroken line from left to right, and layered front to back with surprising depth.

 

But for all you rock ‘n rollers out there (of which we at Lawton Audio are too), you need not fear that any of the marvelous grunt and slam of these remarkable phones has been sacrificed. These Denons go deeper and produce the lowest bass tones of virtually any headphone out there. Our mods will not roll off this response, merely tighten it up, improve its tunefulness and bring it into better proportion with the rest of the frequency spectrum. All that is lost are the extraneous vibrations created throughout the headphone assembly, not any real low-bass musical information.  So, yes, they will still astound you with the depths they will plumb and have you wildly playing air drums along with John Bonham (just without the bass headaches and muddled midrange, thank you very much).

Q: What is the turn-around time?

A: Generally speaking, we require anywhere from 5 to 12 days to complete the modification of your headphone before we return it to you.  Turn-around depends greatly on the level of orders and backlog at any given time.

 

Q: How do I decide which Denon stock unit to have modified?

Q: I like the sound of my stock Denon just fine, is there any reason for me to try this mod?

A: Absolutely! In our opinion, you are only getting half of what these headphones can actually deliver, once properly tuned. We think you’ll be both surprised and pleased with the result.

 

Q: What about my warranty?

A: Customers should be aware that modifying your Denon headphones does void your warranty. However, it should also be noted that unless you purchased from one the handful of authorized Denon on-line retailers (and by doing so, paid a considerable price premium over and beyond the prevailing market price elsewhere), word is that Denon does not honor your warranty anyway. Lawton Audio fully warrants your headphones during the time they are in our possession and undergoing our mods. In the unlikely event that something should go awry (which has not happened after modifying dozens and dozens of units), we will replace your headphones at our cost (provided they did not arrive in damaged, abused, or with some “pre-existing condition” or problem).
