World-Class Headphones... And More!
About Us

Our goal at Lawton Audio is quite simple-- provide the world’s finest headphones.

To this end, we have spent the last year perfecting a series of modifications to the excellent new Denon line of closed headphones (AH-D2000, AH-D5000, AH-D7000) that takes these basic units to a whole new level of performance and musicality. We feel our line of modified headphones match or even exceed the best headphones ever made past or present.

If you read the headphone forums, such as www.head-fi.org, you know that the web has been buzzing about how Lawton Audio has managed to transform these new Denons into truly world-class transducers, stunning and delighting audiophiles and music-lovers alike.

While the stock Denon headphones provide a great starting point, many audiophiles and headphone enthusiasts have noted a number of significant shortcomings that have prevented their performance from reaching the levels achieved by many of the most lusted-after Holy Grails of headphone lore.

Sensing the potential locked away inside the new Denons, long-time headphone fanatic/audiophile and passionate music-lover, Mark Lawton (owner/proprietor of Lawton Audio) went through a half dozen D5000 and D2000 headphones, trying many different strategies, until he hit upon a combination of mods that not only solved the phones’ basic issues, but transformed them into the best headphones he’d ever heard in his 25+ years of headphone listening, including the legendary limited edition Sony MDR-R10.

These mods became known as the markl mods in the headphone geek world, named after Lawton’s Head-Fi screen name “markl”.  Since they were first introduced, response to the mods has been overwhelmingly positive, with a great many members executing them on their own and acclaiming the results.

Many forum members, unwilling to perform the surgery involved in the markl mods themselves began asking their creator to work on their phones, and thus, Lawton Audio (formerly “markl Mods”) was born.

Never satisfied, Lawton continued to work on other aspects of the Denons’ design, looking for ways to take them to even greater heights. To this end, Lawton has teamed up with a very experienced and skilled DIY-er to offer the incredible Jena Labs wire as a replacement for the stock cabling provided by Denon. Lawton & co. went through four of the more popular aftermarket cable solutions before hitting on the Jena Labs cable as the ideal partner for the modified Denons.

Finally, after exhaustive (and exhausting!) research and development, Lawton and Roshan, a highly skilled wood turner and craftsman, have together developed and are introducing brand new replacement wooden cups for the Denon headphones. Not only are these new cups incredibly beautiful and unique, they have been designed to provide just the right volume of air behind the driver to further enhance, widen, and accentuate the soundstaging characteristics of the basic Denons. Adding these new wooden cups truly represents the “final frontier” for these phones, taking them to the very outer limits of their potential.

No matter what level of budget you may have for your headphone listening pleasure, Lawton Audio has a solution for you. Starting with the basic “markl mod-ed” phones, up to the re-cabled and modified phones, and finally on to the modified, re-cabled, and re-cupped phones at the very top of the line, we think you’ll find our products deliver the greatest amount of performance and enjoyment currently possible from a pair of headphones.
